The Chili Fire Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were both asked to participate in an important fund raiser for a local young boy named Patrick Carr. Patrick is a kindergartener at the Chestnut Ridge Elementary school and he is battling Neuroblastoma and a tumor on his adrenal gland. The Sheriff’s Department brought out their D.A.R.E vehicle and they also had their equipment to make New York State safe child cards which was a big hit with the kids. The fire department spent the day letting the public climb all over the ladder truck and answered questions about volunteering and about fire safety in the home. Patrick is a tough and strong boy who has a lot of support from the community to help his fight and the committee who put this whole event together deserves “A Hats Off” and a job well done.

The Chili Fire Department welcomed second graders from Paul Rd Elementary School for a visit to the firehouse. This has become an annual end of the year tradition that we look forward to every year. The children stopped by the firehouse and got a chance to try on a fire helmet, spray a fire hose, visit our dispatch center, and see the fire trucks up close. Firefighters were on hand to answer the many questions and show off their firehouse to the children.

The Chili Fire Department responded for a structure assignment at 3200 Chili Ave the Wendy’s Restaurant for smoke filling the dining area. 4318 was on a detail two buildings away when the call came in and arrived on location first with nothing showing. 4C-33 arrived on location and assumed command on the “B” side. The crews of 4332, 4312 and 4322 entered the structure and had an odor of smoke but nothing visible.
The manager of Wendy’s stated that there was smoke coming from the base board which was on the “A B” side. The crews removed the base board and the paneling down to the brick wall and found smoke puffing out near the window ledge. Inspection holes were then put into the knee wall finding more smoke coming out and a section of sidewalk near the outer corner of the building was also inspected finding a small void where a piece of rebar went through the block wall. The cause of the smoke was a discarded cigarette that was tossed away and fell between the sidewalk and the building and smoldered on the insulation inside the wall. The insulation was extinguished by putting a garden hose through the void in the wall and filling it with water.
